Welcome aboard the USS Portland!

The USS Portland is the proud winner of Obsidian Fleet's Bronze Unit of Merit Award for the month of September 2012!

2389
Almost fifteen years after the end of the Dominion Wars and the Federation is still reeling.

Gone are the days when Starfleet could roam the stars with the simple and overwhelming goals of exploration. Now every corner they turn simply seems to bring them face to face with a new enemy. And even her old allies are beginning to turn. The Klingons, once happy to bridge a relative peace with the Federation, seem ready to gear up for conquest in the wake of the Hobus V incident. The Romulans and Remans, still reeling over the loss of their homeworlds, have fallen into anarchy and civil war. Even the Cardassians, whose last-minute defection ultimately lead to the Dominion's defeat, have little interest in protecting what tentative peace exists with their neighbours.

The Federation stands alone.

But in the face of adversity, Starfleet is bound and determined to hold true to her founding principles. Sending ship after ship out into the endless black, each with the same timeless mission:

To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations and to boldly go where no one has gone before.

The USS Portland has been in service for 67 years and after numerous rebuilds and refits, it proves that you can definitely teach an old dog new tricks as it retains it's position as one of the most advanced and reliable vessels in it's class. Now a part of the prestigious and front-line branch of Starfleet, Obsidian Fleet, she is sent on missions of diplomacy, escort and patrol, scientific and exploratory natures. Placed under the command of first-time CO, Commander Hitoshi Kaneda, the USS Portland sits in wait for her new mission, crew and destiny.

The USS Portland is a proud member of Obsidian Fleet, Task Force 72: The Peacekeepers, Task Group 1: The Grey Wolves.

I've just had confirmation from Admiral Sharr, our crew has officially been transferred to the Ticonderoga and all the technical admin-y bits have been sorted out on their end. That means that anyone who hasn't already needs to head over to our new site at http://ticonderoga.utopia-host.com and get their character into the system. Unfortunately there's no way to directly copy characters across, so you'll just have to do it the old fashioned way and submit an application.

So, it is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to the Portland. She's the ship which saw us through the growing pains of my first year as a CO and will always hold a special place in my heart. I've learned a lot in the last year, made a lot of mistakes which I hopefully won't be repeating and made a lot of friends who I'll hopefully be keeping. Those of you who have been with me the longest (Ish and Penta, I'm looking at you), I thank you for sticking with me through some of the worst times as well as the good ones.

This site will now sit here until the guys from RPGresource come along and re-assign it, so if there's anything on here you desperately want to keep you should have plenty of time to find it and save it somewhere.

Thank you all, and I look forward to many more years of happy simming with you.

Signing off for the last time,

Captain Hitoshi Kaneda
USS Portland

» Keeping You Informed

Posted on Tue Apr 23rd, 2013 @ 12:50am by Commander Hitoshi Kaneda in General News

Just to let everyone know what's going on, John and I haven't just been sat our hands for the last couple of days. We've been busy sorting out a new host and a new site for when we're officially handed the keys to our new ship, which should be any day now.

John (Collins) has been a massive help to me in recent months and, alongside taking on duties as our webmaster, I'm happy to announce that he'll be taking over the role of Executive Officer of the sim!

Since he doesn't want to give up his character of John Collins, whose rank is sufficiently low that bumping him up to First Officer would be illogical, we're going to keep the IC position vacant for now while we decide what to do with it. There are a few different options, such as using a stop-gap NPC, partnering the position with one of the Chief of Staff roles, or since our new ship will be a Carrier we could even have the Fighter Wing Commander act as the ship's IC second-in-command. We'll just have to see how things go.

If you have any suggestions, or there's anything any of you wish to discuss with me about the sim, your characters, our ship, the command structure.. anything at all, feel free to ask away in private messages, or email me or find me on Skype at my usual email address of cash91@live.co.uk

That's all for now, but we'll keep you informed. Watch this space!

» The Votes Are In

Posted on Thu Apr 18th, 2013 @ 10:14am by Commander Hitoshi Kaneda in General News

And the winner is.... Vikrant!

It was a close competition, and since all of you submitted your votes privately I'll assume you want them to stay that way, but I will say that it was very hard fought.

I've asked our TFCO if we can have the USS Ticonderoga and are waiting to hear back from them. For those of you who haven't already, I would suggest heading over to the fleet's Ship Database and familiarizing yourself with the Vikrant-class' characteristics and specifications. She's a large Carrier, about the same length as a Galaxy-class, so quite a bit different to our little Portland.

It's likely that we'll be getting a new URL to go along with our shiny new ship, so stay tuned for that.

Here's hoping you're all (relatively) satisfied with the outcome. Looking forward to continuing to sim with you all!

So, by now, I imagine I've got around to most of you and explained what's happening. For those of you who haven't yet been told, things are going to be a little different from here on.

Basically, my absence has left us quite a few players down and stuck in the middle of a stagnant plotline. Rather than try to kick life into it's carcass, I'm just going to cut the current mission loose and employ a time-skip to get us back on track. This will probably be an IC time-skip of around 3-6 months.

The other thing is that we have the option to switch ships. And rather than make that decision for you, I figured it made more sense to let you guys vote on it. So, we have our five options laid out in front of us. All you need to do is vote on one of them, and whichever one gets the vote majority is the one we'll go with.

So the ship class options are:
A) Luna
B) Akira
C) Vikrant
D) Steamrunner
E) Stick with the Portland

If you want to read up on any of these ship classes before making your decision, full technical specifications can be found here: http://www.obsidianfleet.net/index.php?option=shipdb

Looking forward to hearing from you! Feel free to vote any way you like. PM me, email me, IM me, post your vote as a comment on this news item... whatever you want to do. Just don't forget to vote! When's the next chance you'll get to decide something this big?

And for those of you still with us, thanks for sticking around! Here's looking forward to another great year of simming with you guys!
